Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase,” The medium is the message”, what McLuhan meant by that is that the medium influences how the message is perceived. McLuhan wants the person to understand that the media itself, not the content, should be the focus on what he/she is seeing or reading. The medium affects society because it plays a role not only by the content delivered but also by the characteristics of the medium itself, in that all recipients of a message have a relationship with the medium carrying that message. In other words, the message can be delivered one way to the recipient but it’s the medium that will have the biggest impact. For an example, if you were to tell a overweight person that he/she needs to watch their weight because it is not healthy then they might ignore it but if that same person were to see a story on the news how its unhealthy to be overweight and display some side effects, well then now the person is affected by the medium, because it has greater influence. For most people, we tend to focus on the content to provide us some sort of information and not see how the medium affects us in a social aspect.

The message of a movie, tries to create the feeling of the viewer to almost let go and let your imagination guide you through the film, because as a movie watcher we all know what we are watching is not real but if we can imagine, if it were then it puts a new meaning to the movie. It’s almost like if we were to just here the content then, it would be just another script but if we see and look beyond the content then you can really begin to understand the movie and how it affects you, the viewer.
The web draws attention from all sorts of mass media because it is used as the latest and most innovative marketing tool. Thousands upon thousands people will visit a website and instantly see advertisement surround the web page. The message of a web page is that it wants the person to be influenced by these advertisements. It’s easy to say to a person to go buy this certain product, but if they see it enough times on web sites; the medium, then the message comes clear to them that this product might be legit and to try it out. Therefore, the web has influenced that person.

The most efficient way to get a hold of someone or a group of people is to send an email because all it takes is a few addresses and click on the send button. Email has revolutionized on how to reach out to people in a short matter of time. I feel that the message of an email is accessibility, meaning that email has made society want the information fast and to receive it as quick as possible. Yes, what’s on the email might be important but email has influenced society because we are expecting to receive information instantly or at a time that we prefer. When we open our email account up, one is expecting to open a new piece of mail, they might not even care what the content is, but care how many pieces of mail he/she has received.
The message of social networking is that people like to know that people are interested in them. They might like to speak to that person but it’s just saying that you have spoken with this person is the real message. It’s not what you talked to them about but where you talked to them, which will essentially play a result in the relationship you have with that person. As a society we expect to meet and greet people whether they are new friends or old acquaintances but as long as you are networking with them. An example of this would be Twitter because; the person can see who is following them or what they are saying about something else. Social networking makes a person feel like he/she is in the loop.

If I owned a newspaper, I would have a bigger gossip section because people like to know what’s going on in others people’s lives. It might sound cruel, but it’s the truth because as we have seen on TV, people tune into shows that are most reality and have some sort of drama that occurs during the show. With this, it will give the people to take about something that are not an informative article but will allow people to be involved with people. From there, I would take peoples responses and put them in the next day’s paper to show reactions of different readers. To get people to read my newspaper I would have stories that other newspapers are scared to run because of the criticism that might follow. With this, I am getting my newspapers name out there for people to read. It would be like a web site that is vulgar, but people are eager to see it.

During any political campaign, the nation will see many commercials pertaining to all of the politicians running for office. I feel that when we see an over abundance of commercials or campaign advertising it makes the viewer sometimes question his/her decision on who to vote for. As we all know, both parties will try and dig dirt for some type of negative news on the other person and then run that information in their next campaign ad. I feel that these politicians should say why they would be good rather than why this person would be bad and leave those arguments for a person to person debate, because then you can tell who is the strongest and most loyal behind the statements he is accused of saying or doing. After these commercials are run, the next week when a news anchor is sitting down with one of the parties member, the conversation is about the commercial and what it meant or not meant and that takes and I feel that takes away credibility from the politician.
